Keepin’ it Real

It’s hard.

It’s frustrating.

It’s a pain in the butt.

BUT……It’s worth it!!!

I must admit, for me it was easier to make healthy choices when I had 50lbs to lose.  I was determined and I knew every little thing I put in my mouth was either going to help me or hurt me.

Now I’m comfortable, I feel happy and healthy so what’s wrong with a little ice cream. a slice of pizza, or an extra bowl of cereal…..I still workout?

For some people that works, they can eat anything they want in moderation.  Unfortunately it doesn’t work for meSad smile because I gain weight VERY easily!

This is me and my friend Shannon (both Shannon). The picture on the left was us over 20 years ago Surprised smile and the picture on the right is us after a long, wonderful day at the pool catching up and meeting the latest additions to our families!  This is a painful picture to share because I don’t remember ever looking like that.  I even was so shocked by it that I asked my mom, “did I eat a lot?”  You would think by that picture that I sat around eating all day? She said that my younger sister always ate way more than me, yet she was a skinny little thing all her lifeSad smile.  I could sink into a pint of ice cream over it or even give up and say I’m doomed to be overweight and unhappy with myself the rest of my life.

OR

Realize that God gave me this struggle for an amazing reason!  I have to rely on Him everyday with how to feed and take care of this amazing body He built and designed or I will go right back to my former self.  He knows exactly what will help me and what will harm me and if I’m not listening I will go for what harms me every time!

Two Lessons in One Weekend

So yesterday God challenged me and anyone reading this to choose the narrow path, and make the difficult choice that you know will honor God.  I really can’t believe how much this has already affected my choices in just the past 24 hours!  So right after I did the post my family went to an Ironpigs game and here is a story about fans picking a pig-out menu item

This was such a fun family activity but a huge challenge when it came to making a choice on what I should eat.  My first thought was I’m at a baseball game, you have to pig out on junk because “everyone” else is doing it. The truth is I’m not everyone else, I’m God’s girl who knows how much He loves me and wants me to take care of myself to bring Him glory.  Time to get creative…..after 2 laps around the building looking for a good option among the vendors with lines 20-30 people deep, I found my solution.  The little frozen yogurt shop with NO ONE at it.  First I loaded the large bowl with the plain fruit topping (sometimes they can be in a sugar syrup).  I got blueberries, strawberries, pineapples, and topped it with just a little vanilla frozen yogurt.  It was amazing, I was no longer hungry, and completely satisfied.  The best part is that I knew it was the narrow path and honored God!

So today I’ve been loving this new way of thinking, I’m finding excitement and power in making the tougher choice.  Even before I sat down to type this I got the house clean and dishwasher running Surprised smile Amazing!!

One chore that I usually avoid as long as I can is weeding.  So today, making a tough choice, I weeded and with that God taught me a wonderful lesson!

Ok, I have no green thumb and no landscaping ability but I built that cute little retaining wall and made flower beds leading to the front door of our house.  I did it right – dug a good foundation, took my time to stack the rocks evenly and firmly, I layed black paper, planted plants, and put a thick layer of mulch down.  For me I was thrilled with the results and everything has held up great.  Well, this wall goes across the front of my house and down the entire side.

Here is the side and this is where I did it wrong – I was so motivated in the beginning with the wall across the front and as I rounded the corner I began to lose steam.  I got lazy – instead of digging a foundation I just threw the rocks down, and instead of laying black paper I just planted the plants and put some mulch down.  Result – my wall is falling apart and all my plants died because the weeds were so bad they choked them out.

HERE IS WHAT GOD SHOWED ME

In the world you can take the shortcuts and the easy path, you can also hang out with all the weeds but you will not survive!

And the last but not least of the lessons of the day

When you try and do anything in your own strength verses relying on God

I Have a Challenge For You and Me

13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.”

This is a popular scripture that I’ve heard a million times but I never marinated in until today as I was making choices

Waking early verses sleeping in

Making husbands breakfast verses. letting him do it

Giving graciously verses not giving

working happily verses working miserably

Laundry verses Internet

Playing with kids verses being too busy

Broccoli verses cupcakes

Spending Time with God verses doing all the other stuff you HAVE to do.

I’m sure these aren’t the choices you had to make this morning but I know you had to make choices!

Are you choosing the narrow path?

When pondering this question I don’t think I am, but I WANT TO!  I want to choose the narrow path, and not go by what EVERYONE else is doing.  If narrow is the gate and difficult is the way I want to be on it and I’m going to take this next week to make the difficult choice. I will rely on God to guide me and give me strength to do what I DON’T want to do and the best challenge for me is will I do it with joy?

So I hope someone will join me in making the tougher choices and by next Saturday will we be better or worse because of it?

Moving On

We Trained (kind of), We Ran, and We Lived!!

This is Shannon’s perspective on the 1/2 marathon.  For those of you who love running and run marathons I have a new appreciation for what you do – that I can’t :/

Before I start my trash talking I will say I’m very glad I did this, it taught me a lot. I love running – when I feel like it (not for training), for manageable distances (before boredom and an anger towards running starts to happen), and when my body feels good (before pain sets in).  Those are all the opposites of what it takes to run marathons so that makes me NOT a runner, and I’m ok with that.

The other aspect of running long distance that was hard for me was the food issues.  Eating too much, too little and struggling to find balance during training because I was constantly hungrySad smile I hate that!

So thank you God, we are moving on!

We are doing a bootcamp right now on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s from 6-6:45 in the morning if you want more info you can go to here it’s free and fun!

These woman inspire me more than they know!!  We have every shape, size, and fitness level you could imagine but each one pushes themselves to be better, stronger, and fitter every time.  I love them and I’m thankful that they come out early in the morning for me to kick their bootiesSmile

We all get to choose what we do with our lives, whether we sit in our comfortable zone or we push to be the best we can be.  God has shown me….

Anyone that has come to bootcamp know this is the truth but this is also true in every aspect of our lives.  My prayer is that I will never stay in my comfort zone and God will continue to teach me and grow me into the woman he designed me to be.

“Live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way; bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God.”

Colossians 1:10

One last shout out is for an organization called Sixty Feet it is an amazing story and we are having a really fun event tomorrow May 5th at Planet Smoothie in Doylestown, PA (not sure if I ever mentioned I own Planet Smoothie?)

Transformation Starts On The Inside!

Wow, this is an amazing message that I had to share!  I can’t believe I was able to watch this uninterrupted but it is only because God knew I needed it!

Our story is about our lives being transformed inside and out.   If you don’t know the power and the love of our amazing God it’s time to give up!  That’s right give up trying to do everything in your own strength, give your life to God and let the transformation begin!!!

Here I am

Then I said,“Here I am, I have come- it is written about me in the scroll,  I desire to do your will, O my God;  your law is within my heart.”

Psalm 40:7-8

What if we woke up each morning with prayer on our heart, how different our days would be.  Here I am – that is so strong, it is standing before God saying Here I am. I have come– it’s like telling God you are showing up for work. It is written about me in the scroll – I love this because it is true and reminds us how valuable we are to God. Over and over again in the bible God tells us about the book of life and our name being written in it. I desire to do your will, O my God – it is ultimately what I desire but how often do I do it or even to stay quite long enough to hear it?  Your law is within my heart- This is awesome “Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You” (Psalm 119:11)

With all this truth in this one little prayer how can we not hang it on our mirror, put it in our car, or glue it to the refrigerator to remind us of the only thing that matters – doing the will of God!

10 Weeks to Summer

That’s right ladies summer is just 10 weeks away.  It will be HOT, we will hopefully get to lay by the pool or the beach, and we will surely be outside often either working in the yard, going on hikes, or playing with the kids.  Please don’t let this be a summer that you need to hide under a cover up or feel uncomfortable in your own skin.  We are God’s girls made perfect and beautiful and this could be your summer to be healthy, strong, and fit just as God intended!

We have 10 little challenges for the next 10 weeks, because we know you can do it!!!

  • Start a Journal Start keeping track of each day- your lessons from God, your food, and your workout.  Make sure to write your victories and failures and learn from them!
  • Sign up and Train for a race – This is not just great for you but usually a charity is involved with this goal.  So find something that gets you motivated.  You can race with Becca and I in the Rugged Maniac in NJ or the Patriot Games at Peace Valley Park in PA (info isn’t out yet for this race but we will keep you postedWinking smile)
  • Lose up to 20 pounds (crazy right, just 2 pounds per week) by tracking your food and keeping exercise a priority you can do it.  Check out our food diaries and workout routine if you need any help or ideas.
  • Find your fitness love Make it your goal to find something you love to do that requires you to break a sweat.  Try Zumba, weight lifting, tennis, running, biking, Spinning, or TRX.  The list goes on and on but try a bunch until you find something that makes you feel great, has you looking forward to your next time, and something you will “love”!  I promise everyone has something they just haven’t found it yetSmile
  • Achieve a fitness goal- complete 100 pushups or 5?  Run 5 miles or 3? do 10 pull ups or 2?  Whatever your goal is see it through, but be sure to set a new one!
  • Find 10 Healthy new meals you love keep trying and experimenting until you find super healthy foods that you don’t just eat to be healthy but because they are delicious and you love them!  Make sure to write the recipes and the meals down because I promise you will forget!  Then be sure to share them with usWinking smile
  • One Day at a time Focus on each day, not 10 weeks.
  • Find a workout buddy start asking friends and family if they would like to workout with you and hopefully in the next 10 weeks you can find someone that will buddy up and hold you accountable.
  • Find Balance – over the next 10 weeks aim for balance.  Do not beat yourself up when you eat something you shouldn’t but pat yourself on the back when you overcome a temptation.  Depriving yourself will never work it is about moderation and balance.
  • Draw closer to God This should be your most important goal because nothing else matters!
    “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize?  Run in such a way as to get the prize.  Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training.  They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.” 
1Corinthians 9:24-26

Every time I lose focus about why I do what I do I’m a mess. I will be taking on these challenges with all of you over the next 10 weeks and I’m going to run this race to win a crown that will last forever, not in my own strength but God’s, what about you?
